The new location for this weblog is http://sxswblog.com and we're not using Blogger to udpate it. This weblog still exists in Blogger as a backup only.

Take care, and see ya at the new site.

There was some talk last year about people starting off on new projects inspired by whom they had met and what they had learned at SXSW and about creating a space for future collaborations between antendees. I don't know if we've got the structure in place for the latter but I'd be interested in hearing what kinds of new creative directions and projects people are talking on in the coming year. How bout it?

The results of the panel feedback forms (those postcards that were passed out at the end of each session) are now posted on the SXSW site. For some panels, we received dozens and dozens of these feedback forms--but, for others, we received only a handful. The point I'm making here is that these ratings may not reflect your particular experience at the event. But, browsing through them should help spark dialogue about appropriate programming for next year's SXSW.

"Nowhere was this more evident to me than at SxSW. Sure, I was moved by the warm enthusiasm of the personal publishing zealots, and I don't for a moment question their motivation, or wish to suggest that their voices have no part in the struggle for a democratic web. But when a group of nearly exclusively white, male, middle class American web designers starts to talk about the fact that anyone has access to the online world, I get a really queasy feeling in my stomach. "

My fellow Torontonian Katherine Parrish has posted some very interesting thoughts on the lack of discussion of race, gender, and politics in the online community. Now I'm sure many of you will have some interesting comments, so let's use this space to address some of the points she raises.

KICK! has moved. The kickballl game at noon Saturday is now taking place at Auditorium Shores, part of Town Lake Park. Sorry to change the venue at this late date, but this should make it much easier for people without cars to get to the park, as it's within walking distance of the Convention Center.

We now have a flyer for the LiveJournal Party on Monday, March 11th at 8pm - 1ish at Elysium Nightclub, 705 Red River in Austin. You're all invited and there will be some great music and interesting guests, but absolutely no book readings are allowed! Just a bunch of geeks hanging out with scantily clad camgirls and dominatrixes. Evil fun.

Also, we'll be at the LiveJournal booth (P4) during the Interactive Festival Trade Show. How come more groups don't have booths? We asked nicely and they gave us one. I hope we're next to the Jim Beam booth. (Is drinking bourbon and playing poker allowed on the convention floor?!)

Brad Fitzpatrick (LiveJournal's founder) will be speaking on Monday 11th, 3:30 PM on a panel "Open Source Tools for Online Community and Collaboration".

As a sidenote, I was sent a huge stack of SXSW Trade Show day passes. If anyone needs one, let me know and I will see if I can get one into your hands... or better yet, get one online while you can - the site is being taken down on Saturday. (Thanks to Hugh for the details!)

So you built a professional/corporate/organizational site? You can't get anybody to give you the honest truth about your site? Don't worry camper, SXSW has provided a panel of top developers to let you know what you got things right. But more importantly we will point out the rough spots so you as a developer can bring home more bling (won't your mama be proud). All you do is show up Monday bewteen 3:10 and 3:30 outside the Website Demo Session #1 and put your site on the slip of paper and drop it in the box. At 3:30 the panel draws sites from the box to critique, we will review sites with its developers. Chances are the developers will receive lovely swag also.

Who is reviewing? So glad you asked: Nick Finck of Digital Web and nickfinck.com, Paul Schrank of Spire Media, Carole Guevin of netdiver, and David-Michel Davies of The Webby Awards. The meek moderator will be Thomas Vander Wal of vanderwal.net.

Freelancers and people running a one-man office will be interested in the peer meeting on Monday @ 10:30. I (Eric Durchholz) have gathered together a bunch of tips on how to turn your one-man office into a one-man army. Also, Jenn and I are hosting the peer-meeting "Webcams: How much is too much." Did you know that webcams can be hazardous to your health? Probably. But webcams can save lives, too. Join us as we take webcams to the very edge. Special guests.

Because I want to go 3-for-3 on SXSW and weblog panel participation, I've organized a session entitled, Peer-to-Peer Journalism: Weblogs and Collaborative Media. The star-studded panel includes: Doc Searls, Rusty Foster, and Cameron Marlow. The panel description doesn't seem to be online, so this is what we'll be talking about:

"As the events of Sept. 11 demonstrated, weblogs and community sites such as Slashdot have the potential to change how news is reported--from who writes it and reads it to defining what is news-worthy. But this democratization of media also carries serious responsibility as tenets of traditional journalism can be overlooked in the rush to share a story. This panel will examine the way media and news are created and distributed in the self-published world, and we'll discuss what happens when the readers are also the writers."

I know this is a hot topic these days, so if there's something you'd like to see addressed, feel free to leave some comments. And of course we'll be looking for lots of audience participation in the session on Tuesday March 12 at 12:30 PM.

I've been expressly told, by one of the conference organizers, that:

If you think your panel is going to be particularly interesting (and I hope it is!), you might think about posting a few sentences about the panel on this blurb. Self-promotion is a good thing.

So, I'll start it off and encourage others to do so in the thread. On Monday, I will be appearing in my legal capacity along with Randy Houston and (I think) the ever-popular Meg Hourihan for the Freelance Forum, speaking on "Legal Proceedings" at 3:30 p.m. If you're doing freelance work, as many of you are, or if you're in a small firm, you've probably run up against some common legal issues that we plan to discuss:

Should you make the client sign a contract? What happens when the client doesn't pay and you have a contract? What happens when the client doesn't pay and you don't have a contract? How much will it cost for a lawyer to draw up a contract for a job? What other legal pitfalls do you need to avoid?

Even if you're not freelancing and never want to, you'll have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to come heckle us as we answer every question with the tried-and-true lawyer's answer: "It depends." So how can you resist?

Lawrence Lessig (sxsw speaker) has started a new venture called Creative Commons. Its purpose will be to "...make available flexible, customizable intellectual-property licenses that artists, writers, programmers and others can obtain free of charge to legally define what constitutes acceptable uses of their work." Sounds like it will be working toward a balance between open source licensing and standard commercial licensing. I hope we get more info at his presentation.

The IndependentsDay.org project is hosting a little shindig the evening of Saturday, March 9th downstairs at Empanada Parlor. Tentatively, it will start around 9pm -- but that time isn't confirmed just yet. More information will be posted here and on the ID list when the details are confirmed with Ash at Empanada. A group gathered informally at Empanada last year and had such a fun time that we figured we might as well organize something for this year. ID will also be presenting three panels the next day on Sunday, March 10th.

Matt's thread ("Why aren't we changing the world together?") and the non-Dakota-related conversation going on in the The Dakota thread below have led to an idea:

We should have a virtual space where we keep the energy we get at SXSW going all the time.
We should have a place to tell each other about our projects, get advice and work together on wonderful things.
We should be changing the world together.

So we're gonna build it. Born of the spirits of MetaFilter and The Fray, with Brad as Godfather (anyone remember his message last year about making a true community space for webloggers?) and Dinah as Midwife, we announce the conception of, um, of [the site we can all hang out in and do wonderful things], which really ought to have a shorter name.

One possible choice would be to do it all right here at sxswb.com. I am inclined against that for two reasons: 1) this site is about SXSW and the excitement we have about all getting together in person, in Austin and 2) I think what we're building should be a larger concept encompassing that energy and sharing it worldwide.

Another possible choice would be to call it Table In The Corner and host it at tableinthecorner.com. I like that idea, but that's hardly surprising since I picked the name and registered the domain. I like the idea of saying "Hey, I have a cool idea about foo. Meet me at The Table In The Corner and I'll tell you about it."

So what do all y'all think?

Just in case, if you booked your housing through the SxSW housing office, I recommend you take a moment today to confirm with your hotel that they actually know you are coming. I'm hoping I'm the exception, but while trying to reconfirm the price of the hotel (which I'd failed to write down) I discovered that the Sheraton has no reservation for me despite my confirming email from SxSW saying the room was booked.

I have contacted the SxSW housing office, but they are in the middle of moving from their office-office to their convention center office, so they haven't called back yet. *sigh*

On Saturday, March 10th, starting at about 8pm and going until whenever, I'll be hosting a little get-together up in Cedar Park for those who might like a smaller, quieter, more slowly-paced kind of evening.:)

And no matter what you're going to do on Saturday night, you are invited to come join me and perhaps some other folks for canoeing on Town Lake at around 11am on Saturday. We'll be heading to Baby Acapulco's on Barton Springs Road for margaritas and lunch afterwards, and we'll be done in time to catch the Scott McCloud interview at 4. Come enjoy some fun in the sun, right near downtown! And if the weather sucks, we'll just skip the canoeing part...

On another note, the bluebonnets are just starting to come up, so you out-of-towners will be able to enjoy them. (mediocre pic is from my cheap cheezy digicam on the way to work this morning).

Anyone want to meet some other cool bloggers, and interested in the idea of socializing options not involving huge crowds, loud music, and lots of smoke? Anyone like me, in other words? (I'm a mom of a small kid, and I was never much into the usual idea of "partying" even before that...)

I'm thinking of hosting a little get-together at my roomie's house, for a smallish group (dozen or so maybe) who would like something more quiet. I'm just not sure if anyone would be interested. I'm not often in the position to host parties, being somewhat of a boring homebody, so I'm not really sure...

Some ideas: The place has various computers for use if people want to log in, and ethernet w/cable modem to the net, a big tv with vcr, dvd, etc (anyone for The Matrix at 2 am? Or recorded tapes of panel sessions you missed? (are we allowed to bring in camcorders? I've never been before)). I'm thinking of firing up the barbecue, or roasting a big turkey, or something else yummy and interesting, plus, of course, beer. There is crash space (bed for the luckiest one(s), couch, extra futon mattress and floor for the rest) for those who don't want to drive anywhere afterwards. Smokers are welcome to enjoy their activities on the back porch provided they place their used items in appropriate receptacles and do not set the backyard on fire (it's overgrown with weeds).

My idea of fun is not a wild night out on the town, but a comfortable, small gathering where I have time to talk to people and really get to know them a bit, and dare I say, maybe even have a few Deep Discussions about interesting topics.

Oh yeah, I'm also interested in seeing if anyone would want to go canoeing on Town Lake, and maybe plant a geocache on one of the upstream islands or something...

Let me know if I'm bonkers/a total loser/onto something.

I thought it might be fun to put together a place where we can all swap a few of those pictures and add comments to them. It hasn't been thoroughly tested yet, but here it is anyway: sxswb photos. It's sort of a public photo blog. I added some pics from last year to kick it off. You can add a photo here.

Ok, so how many of us will be traveling halfway across the country to meet people that usually live only an hour (or less!) away? *raises hand* I'm pretty sure this is the motivation for a lot of you, but I could care less about parts of the conference itself. I'm just interested in finally getting to meet a bunch of people who I've been reading for so long.

In probably what could be the polar opposite of Fray Cafe, here is news for the very recently announced Pretty Boys Doing Things.

Starting approximately at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 10 at Bouldin Creek Coffee House, PBDT will consist of readings by Andy Pressman and Ben Brown. There will also be a musical performance by Dakota Smith. It will end within an hour and a half, allowing you to show up fashionably late for any SXSW parties you were planning to attend.

A flyer to print out and promptly throw away can be looked at here.

If you're thinking about attending the music or film festivals at SXSW, check out the band and film listings.

Also, wristbands went on sale today (if you want to ask your Austin friends to pick one up for you). They're $85 (up $10 from last year) in person only, and with a limit of four per buyer.

I get into Austin around dinnertime on Thursday March 8. Is anyone else arriving early, and if so, is anything going on? Maybe we could meet up for a pre-SXSW drink. What time/days are you all arriving and leaving?

The SxSW site has information about 'net access at the conference hotels, but I'm curious about other places to plug in. Does anyone know what, if any, provisions have been made at the Convention Center? Are there nearby cybercafes or bookstores? (Since I'll be visiting with my newly-AirPort-enabled iBook, I'd be particularly interested to hear about wireless access in the Convention Center environs.)

Here's the inevitable question: Are you going? If so, be sure to list your vital stats: name, web site, e-mail, or whatever you feel comfortable with; and for fun, include some bit of information about yourself that the web world doesn't know about you. If you're not going, why not?

So here's the panel grid, are there any things that jump out at you that you can't wait to see? I noticed that there seems to be 2 or 3 things I want to see during many times, does it seem "clumpy" to you too, or is there a nice even mix?
