"Nowhere was this more evident to me than at SxSW. Sure, I was moved by the warm enthusiasm of the personal publishing zealots, and I don't for a moment question their motivation, or wish to suggest that their voices have no part in the struggle for a democratic web. But when a group of nearly exclusively white, male, middle class American web designers starts to talk about the fact that anyone has access to the online world, I get a really queasy feeling in my stomach. "
My fellow Torontonian Katherine Parrish has posted some very interesting thoughts on the lack of discussion of race, gender, and politics in the online community. Now I'm sure many of you will have some interesting comments, so let's use this space to address some of the points she raises.

Suggestions for Improvement

My peer discussion, Taking Online Interactivity Offline, is on Monday at 3:30 (up against both Kottke and Meg! I don't stand a chance!) Basically, it is going to be about using skills you've developed while building online magic to do things in the offline world. I just posted an essay (with discussion!) that I hope will summarize the points I would like to discuss at the meeting. Take a look and post your initial thoughts, and get your brains a'workin' on ideas for the meeting.

I've thrown together a quick day-by-day of what's going on during SXSWi. I'm sure I've overlooked a few events - comment on what you know is missing so everyone can get an idea of the vastness of it all (don't want to leave anything out). I didn't bother with the bulk of the actual conference items, since I think everyone knows what panels and tracks they would like to follow anyway. My overplanning self needed to see it in a compiled form to ease my mind, thought I'd share. See you all there!

Freelancers and people running a one-man office will be interested in the peer meeting on Monday @ 10:30. I (Eric Durchholz) have gathered together a bunch of tips on how to turn your one-man office into a one-man army. If you run a one-man (or woman) operation, I'd love for you to come and share the ups and down of going it alone without biting your nails clean off your hands.
Also, Jenn and I are hosting the peer-meeting "Webcams: How much is too much." Did you know that webcams can be hazardous to your health? Probably. But webcams can save lives, too. Join us as we take webcams to the very edge. Special guests.

Because I want to go 3-for-3 on SXSW and weblog panel participation, I've organized a session entitled, Peer-to-Peer Journalism: Weblogs and Collaborative Media. The star-studded panel includes: Doc Searls, Rusty Foster, and Cameron Marlow. The panel description doesn't seem to be online, so this is what we'll be talking about:
"As the events of Sept. 11 demonstrated, weblogs and community sites such as Slashdot have the potential to change how news is reported--from who writes it and reads it to defining what is news-worthy. But this democratization of media also carries serious responsibility as tenets of traditional journalism can be overlooked in the rush to share a story. This panel will examine the way media and news are created and distributed in the self-published world, and we'll discuss what happens when the readers are also the writers."
I know this is a hot topic these days, so if there's something you'd like to see addressed, feel free to leave some comments. And of course we'll be looking for lots of audience participation in the session on Tuesday March 12 at 12:30 PM.

Its purpose will be to "...make available flexible, customizable intellectual-property licenses that artists, writers, programmers and others can obtain free of charge to legally define what constitutes acceptable uses of their work." Sounds like it will be working toward a balance between open source licensing and standard commercial licensing. I hope we get more info at his presentation.

Between Break Bread With Brad™, Kickball with Anil™, Fray Cafe™, and all the panels and parties, I'm not sure where we'll fit this in, but I'm hoping to organize a little Geocaching™ expedition. More than likely, it will take place one night late after many many Shiner Bocks™. I'm not asking people to sign up, but if you'd be interested in coming along on a little GPS scavenger hunt, let me know...

Kickball! KICK is the game I'm organizing for noon on Saturday, and I'm hoping everyone can join us. A fun, friendly game by regular old playground rules, and best of all, nobody gets picked last.
Are you gonna be there?
NOTE: (March 6) The location for KICK! has changed. See the site for details.

I'm putting together a list of reasons someone should consider attending SXSWi for the upcoming Digital Web Magazine issue. If you have 10-100 words that you'd like to contribute, please email your contribution to sATsooz.com. Mostly this came out of receiving a few emails from people who had never attended before and weren't sure what they'd get out of it since money is rather tight for many of us, etc.. If you send me a contribution, let me know if you want your URL included in the quote. Please send your contribution on or before late Sunday evening, January 27th. Thanks!

The IndependentsDay.org project is hosting a little shindig the evening of Saturday, March 9th downstairs at Empanada Parlor. Tentatively, it will start around 9pm -- but that time isn't confirmed just yet. More information will be posted here and on the ID list when the details are confirmed with Ash at Empanada. A group gathered informally at Empanada last year and had such a fun time that we figured we might as well organize something for this year. ID will also be presenting three panels the next day on Sunday, March 10th.
See you there!

Well, here's the reason I wanted SXSWBlog back: I have a reservation at LaQuinta-Capitol for Friday through Monday nights (4 nights), and I want to find someone to share it with. No worries, there are two double beds in the (non-smoking) room. I think it's $89/night, and $44.50/night would be sweet music to my ears. Let me know if you're interested...

Though it's likely that you've already purchased your SXSW pass, I figured this would be the best place for me to mention that I have five passes to SXSW at the intro price of $150 each. Dammit, these prices are crrrrrazy!!!
For the next 5 people who confirm (i.e. swear on their left nut/boob) that they'll attend, I'll send you info on how to take advantage of this deal. Of course you only need to pay my usual service fee of one rum and coke. Feel free to contact me with your info.
Update: all gone! However, I'll keep you updated if any of the five people flake.

It's a great chance to laugh and vent..Lance Arthur, Justin Hall and others are performing in it...sorry for the formal press release structure but it has al the info. People are invited to burn their options, etc. :-)
We'll also be awarding a Pig's Head (for real..check out the illustrated invite at www.subvert.com for more clarity on the Roasted Boar that the Net has become) for the best layoff story. The crowd will be contributing their angriest funniest anecdotes of start-up hell. Oh the fun! It will save years in therapy! We'll have photos and streams of the event afterwards."

On Saturday, March 10th, starting at about 8pm and going until whenever, I'll be hosting a little get-together up in Cedar Park for those who might like a smaller, quieter, more slowly-paced kind of evening.:)
And no matter what you're going to do on Saturday night, you are invited to come join me and perhaps some other folks for canoeing on Town Lake at around 11am on Saturday. We'll be heading to Baby Acapulco's on Barton Springs Road for margaritas and lunch afterwards, and we'll be done in time to catch the Scott McCloud interview at 4. Come enjoy some fun in the sun, right near downtown! And if the weather sucks, we'll just skip the canoeing part...
On another note, the bluebonnets are just starting to come up, so you out-of-towners will be able to enjoy them. (mediocre pic is from my cheap cheezy digicam on the way to work this morning).

Anyone want to meet some other cool bloggers, and interested in the idea of socializing options not involving huge crowds, loud music, and lots of smoke? Anyone like me, in other words? (I'm a mom of a small kid, and I was never much into the usual idea of "partying" even before that...)
I'm thinking of hosting a little get-together at my roomie's house, for a smallish group (dozen or so maybe) who would like something more quiet. I'm just not sure if anyone would be interested. I'm not often in the position to host parties, being somewhat of a boring homebody, so I'm not really sure...
Some ideas: The place has various computers for use if people want to log in, and ethernet w/cable modem to the net, a big tv with vcr, dvd, etc (anyone for The Matrix at 2 am? Or recorded tapes of panel sessions you missed? (are we allowed to bring in camcorders? I've never been before)). I'm thinking of firing up the barbecue, or roasting a big turkey, or something else yummy and interesting, plus, of course, beer. There is crash space (bed for the luckiest one(s), couch, extra futon mattress and floor for the rest) for those who don't want to drive anywhere afterwards. Smokers are welcome to enjoy their activities on the back porch provided they place their used items in appropriate receptacles and do not set the backyard on fire (it's overgrown with weeds).
My idea of fun is not a wild night out on the town, but a comfortable, small gathering where I have time to talk to people and really get to know them a bit, and dare I say, maybe even have a few Deep Discussions about interesting topics.
Oh yeah, I'm also interested in seeing if anyone would want to go canoeing on Town Lake, and maybe plant a geocache on one of the upstream islands or something...
Let me know if I'm bonkers/a total loser/onto something.

Stupid geek question: is anyone bringing a wireless lan (Apple Airport or something similar) to sxsw? It seems one would be enough to cover connectivity on an entire floor of most hotels. Last year it seemed that everyone was documenting every moment of sxsw with a digital camera. Someone said we are our own paparazzi. I thought it might be fun to put together a place where we can all swap a few of those pictures and add comments to them. It hasn't been thoroughly tested yet, but here it is anyway: sxswb photos. It's sort of a public photo blog. I added some pics from last year to kick it off. You can add a photo here.

In probably what could be the polar opposite of Fray Cafe, here is news for the very recently announced Pretty Boys Doing Things.
Starting approximately at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 10 at Bouldin Creek Coffee House, PBDT will consist of readings by Andy Pressman and Ben Brown. There will also be a musical performance by Dakota Smith. It will end within an hour and a half, allowing you to show up fashionably late for any SXSW parties you were planning to attend.
A flyer to print out and promptly throw away can be looked at here.

Hi everyone! sxswb.com is living again. You can thank Matt Haughey for this new design! (thanks!) If you'd like to post to the front page, let me know and I'll add you to the list. Also, be sure to let me know about any technical problems you run into. And welcome! (we've got a lot of catching up to do.)
